Floods and Festivals - 2012 in Review

Wikiwiki Wahine had a great year. Training in racing canoes is the highlight for many of us. The flood held us up for several weeks but we were able to get back on the river and pull it together enough to have a great racing season.

We raced at two festivals, taking second place overall to a strong mixed team at both. The sweetest racing highlight was at the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival where Wikiwiki Wahine made history, clocking the fastest time of the day out of approximately 100 teams. several competative teams from US and Canada regularly attend the LSDBF where they enjoy held starts, electronic timing and a professional photo finish. As teams cross the finish line, times are recorded and sent to a large reader board, facing the water. What a thrill to see the results so immediately!

Ron and Julie Deters, coach and manager for Wikiwiki Wahine voluntarily lead a co-ed youth paddling program. Youth learn how to paddle racing canoes and have opportunities to do marathon canoe racing. A couple of them have joined our team and have been with us for several years. They paddled on the team when we took home the National Championships in 2010.
